Scully had died giving birth to Katherine, or has she? -------------------------------------- FINDING THE TRUTH Written by: Erin M. Blair -------------------------------------- Katherine Scully's Apartment Annapolis, MD Tuesday, 7:30 a.m. Katherine woke up from a restless night, and she couldn't understand why she was having those nightmares again. "I have to find out why I'm having these nightmares... I can't live like this..." The phone rang, and she answered it. "Scully." "Katherine, it's me. Your father," Fox Mulder said, into his cell phone. He was already at the basement office, sitting behind his desk. "I let you sleep awhile longer. You had an exhausting day yesterday." "I know. I couldn't sleep..." "I know the feeling," Mulder said, with a sigh. "Is it those nightmares?" "Yes," Katherine whispered. "I can't sleep. I keep having those nightmares. I want it to stop." "You know what I said to your mother on a case?" "What?" "A dream is the answer to a question that we haven't yet learned to ask," Mulder said, as he was trying to figure out why his daughter was having these nightmares. "When I was dreaming about what might have happened to your Aunt Samantha, she said the same thing to me." "Are you trying to say that I have to find out why I'm having these dreams? There's got to be a logical explanation..." Mulder smiled at his daughter's words. She was so much like his deceased wife with her similar looks and her skeptical nature. "You sounded like you mother just then." "I know... What would Mom do?" "She would want you to find the answers to your dream." "How would I do that?" "I would like for you to try regression," Mulder said, as he remembered his wife's reaction. "Your mother wasn't into it, but I think that it'll help you." "I'll try anything, Dad." "I know you will." Katherine Scully's Apartment One Hour Later Katherine heard a knock on the door, and she answered the door. She smiled at her father. "Come in." "I love what you had done to your mother's old apartment," Mulder said, as he looked around at Katherine's furnishings. He walked to the end table where a photo of Scully was there, and he looked at their daughter. He fingered Scully's face, and he murmured, "Scully, you would be so proud of our little girl." There's not a day that goes by that he wished that she was still here with them. "Dad?" "I was just thinking..." "Of what?" "I wish that your mother was still here," Mulder said, with a sigh. He saw his daughter's pained expression as he knew that his daughter blamed herself for her mother's death. "I never blamed you, Katherine, and neither had your mother. You were...are...a miracle. We thought that we couldn't have children because of what they had done to her." "Whose they?" Mulder put down the photo of Scully, and sat down on the couch. "People very high up in the government." "Are you sure? Why would they do that?" "I don't know... I'm still not sure... I have some theories, but that's what they are. Theories," Mulder said, as he looked into her hazel eyes. He could tell that she was trying to understand, but she still wasn't sure. "I know how you feel. When you have worked on the X-Files for awhile, you will understand. Trust me." "I do trust you," Katherine said, as she saw her father looked at another photo. It was one of her own when she was younger. "That's me." She noticed a look of sadness spread across his face. "What's wrong?" "I wished that I had seen you then... You don't know how much I wanted to raise you, Katherine." "I know that," Katherine said, with a sigh. She decided to change the subject. "Are you going to tell me more about the regression?" "Yes. I can also do that." "Really?" Katherine asked, as her eyebrows arched up in disbelief. "How come?" "I graduated with a degree in psychology from Oxford University," Mulder said, with a smile. He wished that his daughter had known that. "Would you like to start now?" "Yes," Katherine said, as she sat down on a comfortable chair. She wanted to find out the reasoning behind the dreams... The nightmares... "I want you to go into your safe place to view everything. Nothing will harm you in this safe place. I want you to try to relax and view everything that you'll see as a third party. Where are you?" "I'm in my bedroom." "Try to go back to a time before you became Katherine Dana Scully. Where are you?" "I'm in a building. I...carry a gun..." Mulder listened to this, and he thought that she was still in her current life. "Can you describe where you are?" Katherine nodded. "I'm searching for someone..." "Now, I want you to tell me about you... What do you look like?" "This is crazy," Katherine murmured. "I have auburn hair and blue eyes. Short." "What building is this?" "FBI Headquarters," Katherine said, simply. She looked at Mulder. "Of course, I thought you would know that." "Why is that?" "You know why, Mulder. I was rushing to tell you about our baby." "Our baby?" "We're going to be parents. I found out today. I thought that it'll never happen, but it has." Mulder remembered this conversation with Scully, and he had always replayed it in his memory. Katherine was Scully? How could that be? Souls do change, but how could Scully become their own daughter? "Scully..." "Mulder..." "I wish you were here..." "I am, Mulder. I'm within our daughter, Katherine. You were right when you predicted that she's going to be like me..." "I wish that we had raised her together..." "So do I. I know what my Mom had done to the both of you, but I can understand. She had lost Melissa. She lost me. She didn't want to lose Katherine to you." "Maybe it was for the best, Scully." "I don't think so. Katherine had been hurt by not having either of us in her life." "She believed that you wouldn't like her because she killed you, Scully." "She didn't kill me, Mulder. I gave her my life and my soul. I knew that she was going to live. I'll let her know how much I love her. I wanted her so much. You know that." "I remember, Scully." "At least she's very open minded to regression than I was," Scully said, with a sigh. She looked at her husband, and she knew that she had to get Katherine out of regression. "I think that it's time for her to come out of it." She paused. "Mulder..." "What?" "I'll always love you. Don't forget that..." "I won't. I wish that we had said goodbye in the hospital, but I'm not going to." "How come?" "This isn't the end of us, Scully. We'll go on within our daughter. Believe me." "I do believe you..." Mulder smiled gently at his wife, but there's one thing that he wanted to find out for Katherine. He knew that she was going to ask him about this one. "Scully, I want you to go back to that night when you gave birth to our daughter... You told me that there was something that I needed to know for our Katherine. What was it?" "I knew that I was going to die giving birth to our daughter..." "You knew?" "Yes, I did. I wanted to tell you what the doctor told me. He said that I wouldn't survive giving birth to Katherine. It's not her fault... I don't blame her..." "I know you don't, Scully. I'll tell her everything. I doubt Katherine's going to remember," Mulder said, with a sigh. "Or will she?" "I think that you know the answer to that... When she comes out of this, ask her." "I will," Mulder said, with a sigh. He knew that he had to get Katherine out of her regression. "I guess that I'll see you later..." He paused. "When I count to three, Katherine, you'll be back to your self. One. Two. Three. Katherine?" "Yes," Katherine said, as she came out of the regression. "Did I discover anything?" Mulder nodded at his daughter. He turned on the tape recorder, and pressed play. He knew that she listened to her voice rather skeptically. Like mother, like daughter. "What do you think?" "How could this be?" Katherine asked, as she darted her eyes from the tape recorder to her father. "How could it be that my soul was my mother's? It doesn't make sense." "I thought that we had that talk about Melissa Ephesian, Katherine." "No, we never did. Did you and Mom talk about her?" "Well, at the time, we did. However, your mother was upset that she wasn't my soulmate..." "I guess she still isn't if I'm her now," Katherine said, with a sigh. "That doesn't matter. Katherine, she's still here within you. In fact, if you think about, both of our souls in you. You're the product of our love for each other." "I know," Katherine said, with a whisper. "Mom told me. She told me the truth..." "I think that you found the truth." End of Story.
